Black wrought iron

Another side of Montreal’s unique architecture: the black wrought iron spiral staircases. Seen only in Quebec and New Orleans, placed outdoors in response to Quebec and N’orlean civil law (french civil code) where indoor stairways were considered rooms and taxed accordingly. Same for closets which explains the abundance of Quebeçois armoires built to hold clothing. Also note the multitude of shapes and textures, including the triangles, diamond and circle of the upturned bicycle.
